Cannes Boss On Hollywood Skipping Fest: ‘I Hope The Studio Films Come Back’

Thierry Frémaux, the film festival director at Cannes, addressed concerns about Hollywood’s reluctance to prioritize big world premieres this year. He emphasized his hope that studios will return to the festival, acknowledging that some films may not have been released as planned. Despite this, he highlighted that the industry is redefining itself post-pandemic, amidst rising competition and mergers.

In the same breath, there were both successes and missed opportunities. Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $1.5B, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which earned six Oscars, showed that even after summer tentpoles, some films still thrive. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. won six Oscars including Best Picture, proving that the studio sector has its own strategies. However, many filmmakers argue that skipping festivals could limit creative expression, especially when big projects take precedence.

Frémaux pointed out that while some studios have pulled back from the festival, others, like U.S. cinema, are making strides. James Gray’s Paper Tiger and Ira Sachs’ The Man I Love reflect the global representation of American cinema. Additionally, Steven Soderbergh’s documentary on John Lennon adds a cultural angle to the discussion. He also noted that Italy’s journalists observed that this year’s selection does not feature any titles, underscoring the country’s dedication to independent filmmaking.

If you want to hear complaints about being left out, speak to Italy. As one journalist pointed out, the U.S. film scene is largely represented in Cannes, showing that cinema continues to evolve beyond traditional boundaries.
